CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a crash that killed one 15-year-old and seriously injured a 44-year-old person in southwest Charlotte early Sunday morning.
Officers said they responded to an accident near the intersection of South Tryon Street and Erwin Road just after 1 a.m. where they found a vehicle flipped over.
When Medic arrived on the scene, they found an overturned 2015 Kia Optima with significant front-end damage and a 2015 GMC Acadia with major front-end damage. The driver, later identified as 15-year-old Ri'chard Anthony Donell Davis.
According to authorities, Ri'chard was driving the Kia at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. The Kia had been reported stolen two days before the crash. Ri'chard's toxicology report is pending.
The GMC driver was identified as Carolina Areza and authorities said Areza was not speeding and was not impaired at the time of the crash.
South Tryon Street at Erwin Road was closed as police investigated the crash.
