BELMONT, N.C. — Southbound lanes of Interstate 85 closed to traffic for about seven hours on Saturday morning as detectives investigated a deadly crash near Belmont.
At around 1:45 a.m. officers with the Belmont Police Department responded to a crash on I-85 South at the Belmont Mt. Holly Rd. Bridge.
When officers arrived, they said they found a man in the road who had died at the scene.
Belmont Police said officers spoke with a 25-year-old man who stated he was traveling in the far-left lane of I-85 South when he suddenly saw a disabled vehicle in his lane with no lights on.
The man told police he was unable to avoid the car and struck it in the rear.
The driver of the car, who died from his injuries, was identified as 65-year-old Jackson Munsey.
His family has been notified of his death.
