CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crash in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte left one person dead on Wednesday.
The crash happened near the intersection of Rigsby Road and Steele Creek Road, according to Medic. One person, who was riding a bicycle at the time, was pronounced dead after the crash.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was at the scene investigating the crash.
When officers got to the scene, they found the cyclist lying in the roadway, unresponsive. They identified the cyclist as 58-year-old Mihael Stegne.
Stegne was riding his bicycle across Steele Creek Road outside of the designated cross walk when he was hit by a car traveling in the southbound lanes with the flow of traffic, police said.
He was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the car stayed on scene to speak with officers.
"Excessive speed does not appear to be a contributing factor to this incident," police said in a report.
Stegne’s toxicology report is pending. His next of kin has been notified of his death.
This is an ongoing investigation.
