CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A dog was shot and killed by a police officer during the search for a suspect accused of breaking into a commercial building. This is the second time in under two days that a dog was shot and killed during a police investigation in the Charlotte area.
Early Thursday morning, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department got a call about a break-in at a business on West Boulevard.
During the investigation, police found several dogs in the street outside that building that were not tied up. One of the dogs "displayed aggressive behavior and charged at an officer," CMPD said in a statement released Thursday evening.
The officer shot the dog and the dog subsequently died from its injuries. The dog did not bite the officer.
The officers entered the building after the suspect barricaded himself inside a room. They found and arrested 32-year-old Terrance Davis, who has been charged with felony breaking and entering and other charges related to the barricade.
CMPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the officer who fired the gun at the dog.
This is the second time a dog has been shot and killed by an officer in two days. On Wednesday night, a police officer shot and killed a dog while trying to get a wanted car theft suspect to leave a house in Charlotte.
