Man dies in downtown Newton shooting

The shooting happened near the intersection of South College Avenue and East A Street.

NEWTON, N.C. — A man was arrested after a deadly shooting in Newton on Monday.

The shooting happened near the intersection of South Brady Avenue and East A Street around 3:15 p.m., according to the Newton Police Department. A man was found in a car with gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Kelvin Jerome England.

Police arrested 28-year-old Bricson Cliffton Lineberger for the shooting death of England, who is currently being held in the Catawba County Detention Center without bond.

The Newton Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident.

Lineberger's first court appearance is set for June 11 at the Newton District Court.
