CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Paramedics airlifted an employee of Davidson College to Winston-Salem after a pipe burst.
It happened Thursday afternoon.
The college confirms a worker was tending to a steam leak when the pipe popped. The steam burned him on his neck and back.
MEDIC confirms the injuries are life-threatening.
The employee was working in the utility room in a basement of one of the dorm buildings. There were not any students around at the time. Another employee was there and pulled the victim away quickly.
"There was another worker working with him at the time. who quickly pulled him out of the steam. So his exposure to the steam was not very long," said Bill Giduz, Davidson College spokesperson.
The school says no students were in danger at any time. The repair on the water main is complete.
OSHA is investigating.
