WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A Federal judge sentenced Casey and Sandy Parsons to prison on fraud charges today.
Casey Parsons was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Sandy Parsons was sentenced to 8 years in prison
Both were convicted of fraud for collecting state and federal funds for Erica Parsons care even though she had not been living with them for more than a year.
Several family members testified during last month's hearing on the treatment Erica had to deal with from her adoptive parents.
Casey Parsons' sister Robin Ashley said she saw marks on Erica's face and marks from a belt on her rear end.
Ashley said, "Erica lived in hell," adding that Casey wanted Ashley to take the girl because Casey was "afraid she would kill her."
Jamie Parsons, who is the couple's biological son, said Casey often ordered others in the family to physically beat and abuse Erica.
He said she was made to eat dog food and that the last time she saw her, he said she looked like a zombie and "said she couldn't breathe."
Police say they still don't know what happened to Erica. On the year mark of her disappearance, investigators told NBC Charlotte they're making progress but many questions remain.
Evidence gathered before included red stains on floorboards and a stack of magazines related to JonBenet Ramsey.
Erica's missing person's poster is still on the FBI's website, where police write the information her adoptive parents gave investigators in untrue. From the beginning Casey and Sandy Parsons say they've done nothing wrong.
The total reward for Erica's return now stands at $50,000.
