Fire in potato chip fryer forces Frito-Lay plant evacuation

An evacuation is underway after a call of a structure fire was reported on a business building near Steele Creek Thursday afternoon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An evacuation is underway after a call of a structure fire was reported on a business building near Steele Creek Thursday afternoon.

According to Charlotte Fire, the building located in the 2900 block of Nevada Boulevard had smoke and fire showing on the roof.

Officials say there was a fire in the exhaust vent of a potato chip fryer. Firefighters say the fire is contained to the vent.

NBC Charlotte's crew on the scene reports that there are about 200 employees standing outside the building, as evacuations are underway. No one was injured from the fire, officials say.

In March 29, CMPD investigated the Frito-Lay Factory after ammo and explosives were found buried in the property.
