Here's how you can support York County nonprofits this Martin Luther King holiday

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Ahead of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monday, local communities and nonprofits are calling on people to make a difference.

The town of Fort Mill joins those hosting a day of service and asking for donations supporting everything from the elderly to those without a home.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr…. he has a famous quote that said, ‘Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.’ And that's why we wanted to do that," Jacona Hester with the town of Fort Mill said.

For the fifth year, Fort Mill is working to give back, honoring Dr. King with a "call to service."

“We spotlight area organizations and collect donations for them," Hester said.

Among the nonprofits recognized this year is the York County Council on Aging working to support seniors in York and Chester counties.

“We serve lunch. We have activities," Lauren Giles with York County Council on Aging said. "We do like housekeeping for those homebound and we also provide public transportation for York County.”

As the cost of living rises, Giles said it can be hard for those on a fixed income to make ends meet.

That's where donations come in.

"It makes a huge difference for our clients when you have seniors who are struggling to buy food, and medicine because they're on a limited income these are extras," Giles said.

She said cleaning supplies, non-perishable food, and toiletries can make a difference.

Other organizations need men's t-shirts and sweatpants, diapers, and classroom items like notebooks and students.

“It may seem insignificant what you drop off, but it makes a huge difference in the lives to people who need it," Giles said.

The town of Fort Mill is accepting donations from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, honoring Dr. King's legacy through service.
