Gaston County firefighter hurt while putting out blaze

During the blaze, a ‘Mayday’ call was issued when a firefighter fell through the floor.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Gaston County said a firefighter was seriously hurt while fighting a house fire in a south Gastonia neighborhood, Saturday evening.

The Gaston County firefighter was sent to the hospital after falling through the floor of the home.

A spokesperson for the department said the fire was reported shortly before 6 p.m. at a house in the 2800 block of Forbes Road in Gastonia. 

The owner of the house was home at the time of the fire and was safely evacuated.

While firefighters were working the blaze, the spokesperson said, a ‘Mayday’ call was issued when a firefighter fell through the floor.

That firefighter was treated at the scene by Gaston Emergency Medical Services and transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly before midnight, the firefighter was released from the hospital. 

The house was determined to be a "total loss."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Union Road Fire Department was the lead agency responding to the fire, with support from New Hope, Ag Center, Crowders Mountain, Lucia-Riverbend, Gastonia, Bethel, Clover and the Gaston County Police Department.
