Armed robber scares Gastonia Target shoppers

It was terror inside the Gastonia Target store for dozens of shoppers. Many called 911 for help.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- It was terror inside the Gastonia Target store for dozens of shoppers. Many called 911 for help.

One caller was recorded saying, "Someone has a gun inside the store."

One woman called 911 from a changing room, trying not to draw any attention to herself, worried about the armed man and what he may do with his gun.

"We were told to run. I am hiding in the dressing room," the caller told dispatch.

Gastonia Police say 24-year-old Antonio Rodas was trying to steal hundreds of dollars in kids and adult clothing from the Target on Cox Road Monday night.

When store workers and security guards tried to stop him, callers say things turned violent.

"He was stealing a cart full of stuff and our executive tried to stop him and the guy pulled out a gun."

"Are they in custody now?"

"No, I had a scuffle with them at the door."

"Did you get any kind of information on him?"

"No, he pulled out a pistol."

After those calls, police showed up within minutes. A short time later investigators found Rodas and arrested him.

Even with the suspected armed robber in jail, shoppers say it's crimes like this that make them worry about their safety.

"It's very surprising to me because you wouldn't expect you to be here like in your back door," said one shopper.

There is security video, but so far, that hasn't been released.
