Death investigation launched in west Gastonia, police say

Reports of a possibly deceased person were made Wednesday evening.

GASTONIA, N.C. — The Gastonia Police Department is investigating a woman's death Wednesday evening.

In a tweet, the department said they were called to Beechwood Drive near North Webb Street on the west side of town around 6:23 p.m. The investigation is happening in a wooded area, near train tracks that run along Airline Avenue.

On Thursday, Gastonia Police identified the woman as 23-year-old Shaniya Everett, who lived in Gastonia. As of publication, officers don't suspect foul play in her death.

Investigators are now waiting for the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the manner and cause of Everett's death.
