GASTONIA, N.C -- Gastonia Police arrested the driver in a hit-and-run case that left a grandfather with life-threatening injuries early Sunday morning.
William David McFalls, 58, was crossing West Garrison Boulevard near South Weldon Street around 2 a.m. when a small silver-gray sedan hit him police say.
The car, later identified as a 2006 Nissan Sentra, was traveling west on West Garrison Boulevard, and the driver didn't stop after hitting McFalls.
On Wednesday afternoon, 29-year-old Chris Lavon Wilson turned himself into the Gaston County Sheriff's Office.
Sergeant Keith McCabe said officers still need to communicate with the district attorney's office and follow up on McFalls' condition before filing charges.
Ashleigh Hodge, McFalls' daughter, said the family was looking forward to celebrating Father's Day before the incident.
"We were just going to pretty much spend the day with him," Hodge said. "Then we were going to invite him fishing that night because his favorite thing to do...is to fish."
McFalls was airlifted to CMC-Main with life-threatening injuries. Hodge said she's angry the driver didn't stop after hitting her father.
"I don't like the fact that my father was left there like a piece of trash, left for dead," she said. "We just need help."
Police said they plan to release the driver's identity in the coming hours.
