GASTONIA, N.C. — Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement says its kennels are over capacity, and the group needs help finding fur-ever homes and foster families for animals in need.
Shelter leaders told WCNC Charlotte on Tuesday there is only one open kennel as of now, but there are pending calls in the system for strays coming in. So far this month, GCACE has taken in 146 animals and counting.
Placing a number on how many foster families or adoptions are needed is difficult; GCACE says as soon as one animal leaves, another one comes into the building to take its place in the kennel. However, the goal is to help get as many animals rescued, adopted, or fostered as soon as possible.
Those who are interested in adopting or fostering can go through the online application process, which includes separate questionnaires for fostering and adopting. GCACE says they check for things like homeownership, if other pets in the home are up-to-date on veterinary care, and how a dog already in the home might interact with another dog via a meet-and-greet. Potential foster families are also subject to background checks.
Families who are hoping to see if a pet would be a good fit for their homes can take an animal out for a three-day staycation to ensure things go well and help decide on making an adoption commitment.
