Road partially blocked after sinkhole reported in Gastonia

It appears to have stemmed from a water or sewer leak underground, city officials said.

GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia city street crews are working on maintenance after a sinkhole was reported.

The sinkhole is on City Church Street, off South New Hope Road, in Gastonia. City officials confirmed that the streets division of the city's Public Works department responded to the area and secured it with traffic cones. 

It appears to have stemmed from a water or sewer leak underground, city officials said. 

People are asked to drive carefully in the area while repairs are underway.
