GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia city leaders voted to raise the price for the GoGastonia public microtransit service during a meeting on Tuesday.
The proposal was approved by a 6-1 vote. That means the approved rate hike will add 50 cents to the city's microtransit option, jumping from $2 to $2.50 for most riders.
That said, not everyone will have that new fee.
Elderly passengers and those with disabilities will pay $1.25, which is still an increase -- up from $1. The city said the increase would help fund additional GoGastonia cars for the area.
The transit service launched in July, and just like with Lyft or Uber, people can schedule a ride using their phone. At the time it was launched, there were 14 vehicles in service, replacing six city bus routes.
The rate hike will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
