Grier Heights nonprofit helps Charlotte family find stability and hope

After 14 years, the Brown family gets a permanent home with the help of Crossroads program.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — When Judith Brown and her family moved to Charlotte 14 years ago, they faced numerous housing challenges that tested their resilience. Living with limited income and two sons on the autism spectrum, Brown navigated a difficult housing landscape until finding hope through Crossroads Corporation for Affordable Housing and Community Development.

"Both of my sons are on the autism spectrum and I myself deal with disabilities, so we were on a limited income," Brown said. This financial constraint significantly impacted her housing options.

For 14 years, Brown's family cycled through tight living spaces. An unexpected rent-doubling forced them to relocate, and they subsequently lived in a cramped townhome under 1,000 square feet.

"It was either that or face homelessness," Brown recalled.

The turning point came when Crossroads introduced her to affordable homeownership opportunities in Grier Heights, a neighborhood with deep historical roots.

Tiffany Capers, the organization's executive director, noted the area's significance, saying it is a "place where people can have homes, jobs and opportunities for economic upward mobility."

Today, Brown's family has achieved a milestone: A brand-new two-level home that offers space and dignity.

"Now we can have parties at our house. It's just that freedom—that I think is the biggest thing," Brown said, her voice reflecting newfound joy.

Crossroads has been developing affordable housing in Grier Heights since 2008, transforming lives by providing not just shelter, but pathways to economic stability.

The organization's holistic approach — from location selection to personalized home support — has been crucial.

"I felt safe that we could do this," Brown said of her journey to homeownership.

For Brown, the new home represents more than just four walls. It's a place where family gatherings, birthday celebrations, and Thanksgiving dinners are now possible — milestones previously out of reach.
