STATESVILLE, N.C. — A teen was arrested after police found a gun in their possession.
The incident happened at Statesville High School just before 9 a.m. on Monday, according to the Statesville Police Department.
A metal detector at the school alerted authorities to the student, prompting a search of his backpack. A 9mm handgun was found in the student's backpack, according to police.
The firearm was seized without incident. No injuries or threats to the school were reported.
The student is charged with felony possession of a firearm on educational property. Police have not released the student's name.
Statesville police and Iredell-Statesville Schools personnel are further investigating the incident. The school district has not released a statement on the situation.
