Habitat and partners announce $24M mixed-income housing community in Charlotte

The new community will be located in northeast Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region announced a partnership that it said will result in more affordable homes for Charlotte-area families.

Habitat Charlotte Region said it is teaming up with Kingdom Development Partners and Harmon Construction Services to create a whole new neighborhood comprised of 83 townhomes.

The organization said that half of the 83 townhomes in the community will be sold at market rates and half will be sold to families in the Habitat for Humanity program.

The neighborhood, to be located in northeast Charlotte, will be called Carya Pond.

"While Habitat Charlotte has a 40-year history of building quality, affordable homes with staff, volunteers, and partner families, this development represents a new chapter in our commitment to nurturing diverse, inclusive communities,” said Laura Belcher, Habitat Charlotte Region CEO, in a statement.

‌The three organizations signed an agreement last week and said they expect to begin work on the project "immediately."

“By combining our resources with the expertise of Kingdom Development Partners and Harmon Construction, we can create a vibrant community in addition to building homes and hope,” Belcher said.

Carya Pond will be made up of 40 Habitat units and 43 units to be sold on the open market, "symbolizing a blend of Habitat's homeownership mission and market-rate housing," the organization said.

Habitat will finance and prepare the land for construction and the two local development companies will build the townhomes.

When the construction is finished, Habitat will purchase 40 homes.
