Hazmat crews respond to leak after Salisbury water tank collapse near industrial site

One plant employee was hurt, but treated on-site before being checked out at a hospital.

SALISBURY, N.C. — The Salisbury Fire Department and a hazmat team worked to stabilize the scene of a tank collapse in an industrial area on Friday, according to a Salisbury spokesperson.

The tank collapsed between the Nouryon plant and Henkel Corporation. Crews later said it was a water tank, releasing 300,000 gallons of water that caused a natural gas line rupture.

Several crews are at the scene on Cedar Springs Road in Salisbury. Personnel from both plants were evacuated and Piedmont Natural Gas got the gas line secured in an hour.

One plant employee was hurt and treated on-site before being checked out at a nearby hospital. Crews said the employee had non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital.

Salisbury Fire noted some of the water from the collapsed tank entered the site's drainage system and made it to nearby Grants Creek. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is now on site to evaluate the environmental impact.

Crews have left the site and the road nearby was reopened to traffic.
