Hickory woman dies after setting house on fire, shooting herself

Several good Samaritans saw smoke and pulled the woman out of the house, the Alexander County Sheriff's Office said.

A Hickory woman died in the hospital on Friday after intentionally setting her house on fire and shooting herself, the Alexander County Sheriff's Office said.

It happened on North Shore Drive, which is in the Oliver’s Landing Development.

Several Good Samaritans who were in the area saw smoke and pulled the woman out of the burning house.

The victim, Teresa Ann Bowman, was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries, which included a single gunshot wound. 

Investigators said Bowman had first set fire to her house and, then, shot herself.

Multiple fire departments worked to successfully put the fire out. 

Responding to help on the scene were: Bethlehem Fire and Rescue, Ellendale Fire Department, Wittenburg Fire Department, Grace Chapel Fire Department, Hiddenite Fire Department, Alexander County Rescue, Alexander County EMS, Alexander County Fire Marshal’s Office and Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
