HICKORY, N.C. — A Hickory woman will spend up to 10 years in prison following her conviction for multiple theft-related charges in Catawba County.
Conya Denise Montgomery, 46, was given the active prison term by Superior Court Judge Daniel A. Kuehnert from Burke County, after Montgomery entered a guilty plea to multiple offenses and admitted her status as a habitual felon. She pleaded guilty to attempted common law robbery, larceny from a person, financial card theft, four counts of obtaining property by false pretense and attempted obtaining property by false pretense.
Montgomery’s prison sentence was lengthened by prior felony convictions that took place in 2023.
The Hickory Police Department said in March 2023, Montgomery tried to get a victim to give her money that she did not have. Montgomery allegedly told the victim to get the money from an ATM, but the victim refused. She grabbed the victim’s pocketbook and phone before running away, according to officers. She later was picked up by law enforcement.
She was also previously accused of taking another person’s debit card and spending $330 at various locations.
Montgomery was also charged with breaking into a car in August 2023 and stealing a card. Video surveillance footage at an unnamed business showed Montgomery attempting to make the purchases, but the transactions were declined.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
