LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are working to determine the identity of human remains found in a wooded area in Lancaster County.
The remains were found on Wednesday, Nov. 13 around 3:45 p.m. in a wooded area near Bethel Road, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. A utility crew in the area found the remains and notified the sheriff's office, prompting a further search of the area.
Several bones and other evidence were found scattered across an area of about 100 yards in the following days. The search continued until Monday.
Investigators determined that the remains were human. The identity of the remains is unknown.
The person did not die recently, according to the sheriff's office. It is believed the remains have been in the area for years.
"We are working diligently to determine the identity of the person found,” Barry Faile, Lancaster County Sheriff, said. “We hope examination of the remains by the anthropologist and the coroner will provide information leading to the identity of this person.”
