Human remains found near York County highway, sheriff's office says

Investigators say the remains were deteriorated to the point that the person's gender was unidentifiable.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — An investigation is underway after human remains were found near a highway in York County.

The York County Sheriff's Office says workers found the remains near Highway 557 and Ridge Road east of Clover on Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators say the person has not been identified. The remains were so deteriorated that the person's gender is not even identifiable, according to the sheriff's office.

It's not known how long the remains were there. No cause of death was determined by investigators. 

York County officials have no further information on the remains. The sheriff's office is investigating further.
