'Indie on Wheels': Nonprofit theater aiming to bring community together with new initiative

The first stop is Thursday, Feb. 29, at the Sugaw Creek Recreation Center.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Independent Picture House, a nonprofit theater in Charlotte's Eastway neighborhood, is working to bring the greater Charlotte community together over film through a new traveling initiative.

The "Indie on Wheels" film series is bringing screenings to libraries and recreation centers through Mecklenburg County over the next few months -- and it's all for free.

"Cinema has the power to forge and bridge communities, especially here in Charlotte’s vibrant creative ecosystem," the Independent Picture House says in a news release on its website, adding this effort allows the nonprofit to ensure its goal of creating a place for community cinema isn't limited to the theater itself.

The initiative is sponsored by the Culture Blocks community program, a partnership between the Arts & Science Council, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. It's aimed at bringing free cultural experiences directly to where people are.

The first stop is Thursday, Feb. 29, at the Sugaw Creek Recreation Center, where community members can watch the documentary "My Soul Speaks." It was filmed and produced in Charlotte in 2003 and 2004, and is focused on local poets.

You can stream WCNC Charlotte on Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV, just download the free app.

After the screening, attendees can join in a public discussion with the documentary's director and poet Bluz Rogers.
