Indian Trail leaders surveying residents to get feedback for public transit plan

Indian Trail leaders are asking for public feedback as they work to develop at "Transportation Master Plan" for the town.

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The town of Indian Trail is asking for public feedback to help develop its "Transportation Master Plan" through an online survey.

The town says feedback gathered during the survey will be taken into consideration for any public transit decisions. In a post on Facebook, the town of Indian Trail says the transportation plan will connect people and places, efficiently move goods and expand travel choices.

Todd Huntsinger is the director of engineering for the town and tells WCNC Charlotte a big priority for the plan includes hearing from community members. He said,

“You want the public to understand what's going on, if they have any comments or want to, you know, talk about any further you get them involved," Huntsinger said. "And that way they know what's coming down the line.”

Huntsinger added the town is preparing for the expansion that's on the way to town. “We have a proactive stance, try to see what that's going to be impacted for us transportation or on our roads."

Questions on the survey include what residents feel is the biggest transportation issue in town, with options ranging from congestion on major roads to unsafe intersections and a lack of connectivity to different parts of town. The survey also asks if people would be interested in extending bus service from Mecklenburg County into Union County and gauges public support for the Silver Line rail project.

Community members have until April 26 to submit their survey. Some community members have already taken the opportunity to share their input. In hopes of improving the travel and overall experience within the town.  Jordan Fancher travels to Indian Trail often.

“They need to widen the lanes, so we need more lanes," Fancher said.

Zach Keeshler comes to the area almost daily for work. “They're gonna have to do something because it is going to get extremely crowded and congested everywhere," he said.

A second round of public feedback is anticipated this fall with leaders expected to have a transportation development plan in place by the end of 2024.
