Bishopville, SC (WLTX) - An inmate has been stabbed to death at a maximum security prison in South Carolina.
The SC Department of Corrections confirmed that 51-year-old Larry Jerome Rainey was killed Monday at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville.
According to the agency, the death happened during an inmate on inmate fight.
Additional details leading up to the death have not been released.
Rainey was serving time for pointing a firearm and common law robbery convictions. Online prison records show Rainey had a long history of disciplinary actions against him, including for inciting a disturbance, threatening employees, and in one case, assault and battery of a prison employee.
Lee Correctional houses violent offenders, including many prisoners who were sentenced to life behind bars.
The prison has had an ongoing problem with inmates being able to get illegal contraband inside, including cell phones by inmates. SC Corrections Director Bryan Stirling has asked the federal government to approve cell phone jamming technology in an effort to curb the problem.
