I-77 bridge renamed after sheriff killed by kidnapping suspect in 1930s

Sheriff Godfrey "Click" Kimball was shot and killed by a man accused of robbing Statesville's mayor and stealing his car in August 1934.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A bridge in Iredell County was renamed Thursday in honor of a sheriff who was shot and killed in the line of duty 90 years ago.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced Thursday that the bridge along southbound Interstate 77 at Interstate 40 in Statesville will be renamed after Sheriff Godfrey "Click" Kimball. A World War I veteran, Kimball was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect accused of kidnapping and robbing Statesville's mayor in August 1934.
