IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. โ The Iredell County Sheriff's Office unveiled a new bulletproof, tactical vehicle that will allow deputies to respond to dangerous and active-shooter situations.
Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the purchase of The Rook, a fully bullet-resistant tactical vehicle that can be raised to block a shooter's line of sight and deploy SWAT agents and other first responders to upper-level positions. The vehicle can be operated manually or via remote control. It also has multiple attachments to provide the best possible response to various scenarios.
The Rook was purchased following two incidents in Iredell County and the deadly police ambush in east Charlotte earlier this year. During one of the Iredell County situations, over 350 rounds were fired at deputies.
"We are committed to ensuring that Iredell County residents are protected from any threat, at any time," Campbell said in a statement. "This vehicle is a testament to that commitment, made possible by a strong Board of Commissioners who understand and prioritize the needs of our community."
All agencies in Iredell County will have access to the vehicle, Campbell said.
