Family mourns loss of pets in Kannapolis house fire

Five cats, a tortoise, a dog, and a rabbit were rescued from the scene.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A family in Kannapolis is mourning the loss of their pets after a fire at their home. 

Three of the family's eight cats died during the fire, the Kannapolis Fire Department confirmed.

The other pets -- the five remaining cats, a tortoise, a dog, and a rabbit -- were all rescued from the scene and taken to receive treatment.

The fire started around 5 a.m. Sunday. It's not yet publicly known how much damage was left behind, but Kannapolis Fire confirmed the American Red Cross is assisting the family in this time.
