CMS kindergarteners, first graders receiving extra literacy support

The program is through a partnership with Stanford University to help students exceed grade-level reading proficiency.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In an effort to increase reading levels for more kids, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is partnering with Stanford University to give students a boost.

"The target of this is early literacy, kindergarten, first grade. and then it is focused on accelerating reading skills with early literacy focus," Nancy Brightwell with CMS said.

The program is currently in 16 schools, and it allows students 15 minutes per day of one-on-one reading tutoring.

"The program is designed to dramatically increase regardless of what student's level of preparedness is when they come into kindergarten," said Brightwell.

"They'll compare the results and the progress of these students against schools like schools that did not have a program," said Brightwell.

CMS leaders say right now they’re seeing lots of progress, and if they continue to see major improvements by the end of the school year the next step would be figuring out a way to fund it ahead of next year.

"It' is amazing how the students enjoy it. and we're seeing interesting results from even our multilingual learners who aren't fluent in English at all yet," said Brightwell.
