Larry Sprinkle released from hospital

WCNC forecaster Larry Sprinkle has been released from the hospital and continues his long road to recovery following a car accident last month along Interstate 485.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- WCNC forecaster Larry Sprinkle has been released from the hospital and continues his long road to recovery following a car accident last month along Interstate 485.

The accident happened May 4 near Johnston Road. Larry rear-ended another vehicle as traffic stopped along the interstate. The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

Larry broke both legs, his wrist was shattered and he broke several ribs.

Larry continues rehabilitation and remains in a wheelchair. On Wednesday Larry was fitted with a walking boot on his right leg and stood with the aid of a nurse and a walker. Larry will continue rehabilitation with the help of a walker. Doctors say his right leg is progressing quicker than his left, but they hope within a month he will be able to stand and put weight on both legs.

Larry says he remains overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Charlotte community. He spends a lot of time reading cards and letters sent from NBC Charlotte viewers.

As many people know, Larry has won several awards for "best hair" and he said he's happy to say he got his first haircut since the accident.

"I don't look like a hippie anymore," he said with a smile.

Larry will continue to receive rehabilitation for the next few weeks and there is no date set for his return to work. He and his family continue to request privacy at this time.
