Lenoir woman killed in crash on wet road

The crash happened on Calico Road near Townsend Farm Lane.

LENOIR, N.C. — A Lenoir woman was killed in a crash in Caldwell County on Tuesday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The deadly crash happened on Calico Road near Townsend Farm Lane around 2:30 a.m.

Alexis Makayla Russell, 22, died at the scene.

She had been traveling north on Calico Road when she lost control in rainy conditions, according to officials. Russell drove off the right side of the road and hit an embankment. Her car went back across the road and hit a tree on the left side.

Russell was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash, according to highway patrol officials.

"The initial investigation indicates excessive speed for conditions to be the contributing factor in the collision," highway patrol said.

During the on-scene investigation, Calico Road was closed in the area for about three hours.
