CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Catawba County license plate office that closed last year is expected to reopen this month, state officials said.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced that the license plate agency on Conover Boulevard West in Conover will open on July 10. The office closed last October when the previous operator's contract ended.
The new agency will be at the same location. It will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The announcement comes as dozens of DMV fees went up nearly 20% starting this week. Costs for both driver's license renewals and vehicle registrations are going up. State law requires the DMV to adjust its fees and rates every four years.
A five-year driver's license will cost $32.50. An eight-year license will run you $52. The DMV said licenses will go up $1 per year increase for regular drivers. This means a five-year license goes up $5 and an eight-year license goes up $8. Learner's permits will go up by $4 overall, and duplicate licenses will now be $2.75 more.
