Man arrested after shots fired in Lincolnton store

The man fired multiple shots in the air before 'pistol whipping' a woman, according to the Lincolnton Police Department.

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A Shelby man was arrested after shooting a gun in the air at a Lincolnton Dollar General and pistol whipping a woman on Wednesday, according to the Lincolnton Police Department.

Officers said they found "multiple female victims who were involved in a physical disturbance" at a Dollar General store on 656 Center Drive.

During the chaos in the store, a man had gone back to his car to grab a handgun, police said. The man fired multiple shots in the air before pistol whipping a woman and running away from the scene, officials added.

Police identified the man as 28-year-old Tavaz Kaleb Brooks and found him a short distance away from the store. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

Brooks was taken to the magistrate's office for these charges and was also served a warrant for failure to appear for court for prior charges.

He is currently held in the Lincoln County Jail without bond.

The people who were hurt only had minor injuries.

This case is still under investigation, additional charges are pending.
