Man claims he was hurt in an American Airlines flight to Charlotte

The man was seriously hurt after passengers felt a "violent jolt" inside the plane when it landed at Charlotte's airport in 2021, a federal lawsuit says.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a federal lawsuit against American Airlines, a man claims he was seriously hurt when the plane he was on had a rough landing at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Eric Murphy is suing the air giant over a 2021 flight from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

He said everything was normal on American Airlines flight number AA855 until it approached the runway in Charlotte.

The flight crew failed to monitor the approach speed and rate of descent, he claimed, which caused the plane to hit the runway "at an excessive vertical rate of speed."

The impact resulted in a "violent jolt inside the cabin, causing several passengers audibly to cry out and causing Plaintiff Murphy to suffer serious and permanent injuries to his back and spine," the lawsuit says.

Murphy is still suffering from pain and medical costs, he said.

Murphy said the airline was negligent and "failed to comply with this requirement by failing to operate AA855 in a safe and responsible manner, failing to train its flight crew in the safe and non-hazardous operation of its aircraft."
