Man found dead after CMPD, SWAT, negotiators respond

A man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after CMPD attempted to serve him a warrant.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after CMPD attempted to serve him a warrant.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team attempted to serve warrants Tuesday morning to two 18-year-old's who were accused of attempted armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Warrants for Timothy Andre Davis and Antonio Wright were out since last Wednesday.

Members of the VCAT team were conducting surveillance outside a home on Sparrow Valley Way in northwest Charlotte, while other members of the team arrested Wright without incident at a separate location at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Around 7:20 a.m., the VCAT set up a perimeter around the house and knocked on the front door. At that point, a man matching Davis’s description peeked out the window and officers heard movement in the home.

From outside the home, officers tried to reach Davis through social media, texts and via a loud speaker. However, he did not respond.

After two hours, VCAT requested that the SWAT team take over the incident.

At 10:00 a.m., the SWAT team parked its armored vehicle in front of the home and used its loud speaker to give Davis instructions for coming out of the home safely and a phone number in case he wanted to talk to a negotiator first.

After receiving no response within 40-minutes, the SWAT Team deployed a robot – and then a canine – to search the first floor of the home. No one was located in that search. The entry team then used a robot and canine to search accessible areas of the second floor. They observed two closed doors and an open attic space, but the accessible area was clear.

The SWAT entry team and canine moved upstairs. The officers opened one of the closed doors and the canine located Timothy Andre Davis on the floor with a gun lying near his feet. He did not move when the canine touched him.

By 11:17 a.m., a Mecklenburg County EMS Medic pronounced Davis deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The entry team cleared the remainder of the house and attic and found no one else inside.

Wright has been charged with 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
