CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges in two states after police say he made a bomb threat and was found with pipe bombs in his home.
Derek Johnson, 50, is facing charges in Mecklenburg County Court for possessing pipe bombs and having a firearm as a felon, according to court documents.
Records show Johnson made a bomb threat in York County on Oct. 18. However, records do not say who or what Johnson threatened.
During a search warrant of Johnson's south Charlotte apartment the following day, police found pipe bombs and a pistol, according to court records.
Johnson was convicted of burglary in New Jersey in 1993, prompting his status as a felon, according to court records.
York County officials are requesting that Johnson be extradited to South Carolina to be formally charged there.
Johnson is being held in Mecklenburg County jail with a $1 million bond. Public records do not say when Johnson's next court date is.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
WCNC Charlotte is choosing to show the mugshots of the suspects in this case because Derek Johnson was charged with a serious crime.
