CHESTER, S.C. — One man is dead following an overnight shooting in Chester, according to the Chester Police Department.
Police were alerted to gunfire near Spring Street and White Street around 1 a.m. There, officers found a 25-year-old Chester man with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately taken to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly before 4 a.m., police said.
"We understand that incidents like this can raise concerns within our community. We want to assure our residents that the safety of our citizens is our top priority," said a press release signed by City Administrator Malik Whitaker.
The department said it is actively investigating the shooting and will provide more details when they are available.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends during this difficult time," Whitaker said. "Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate this situation together."

The state law enforcement agency is helping in the investigation.
