Man killed in golf cart crash, woman left with life-threatening injuries

Roy Epps, 58, died in the crash. His wife was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man is accused of impaired driving after a crash left one person dead and another person with life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened on Hickory Nut Ridge Road near Baton Church Road in Caldwell County on Saturday around 3:10 p.m., according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Cody Pennell, 33, was driving a Chevy Malibu when he crashed into a golf cart driven by Roy Epps, 58, who died after being taken to the hospital. Julie Epps, Roy Epps' wife, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash. Her condition at this time is not known.

Investigators say Pennell hit the golf cart while it was turning left from a private driveaway. 

Pennell is charged with driving while impaired. Additional charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
