CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — A man died after being shot by a police officer on Sunday.
The shooting happened on West 2nd Street near C Street on Sunday after 1 p.m., according to the Cherryville Police Department.
Police say they were called to the area for a man who "had caused a disturbance." He was found by police walking along the road.
After police approached the man, police say a fight ensued between him and two officers, according to police.
The man assaulted one of the officers and then grabbed a pipe, according to police. An officer at the scene then fired a shot at the man. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
By Tuesday, police had publically identified the man as 35-year-old Thomas Rivera.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is further investigating this incident. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, following standard protocol.
