GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Two tractor-trailers crashed on I-85 near Kings Mountain, causing a massive fire and leaving one person dead on Sunday.
The crash happened on I-85 South near mile marker 10 on Sunday around 4 p.m. One tractor-trailer was traveling around 5 mph due to a flat tire when it was struck by a second tractor-trailer, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP). The trucks crashed after the first one was trying to get to the shoulder and the second one was trying to change lanes.
Both tractor-trailers burst into flames after the impact, according to NCSHP. The driver of the second tractor-trailer died at the scene. The driver of the first tractor-trailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
It took two hours to put out the fire, according to NCSHP.
All lanes of I-85 S were closed in the area until around 2 a.m.
