Matthews police chief announces resignation

Mike Clesceri will be returning to Illinois after serving as Matthews' police chief for six months.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Matthews Police Chief Mike Clesceri announced he will be resigning later this month due to "unforeseen personal circumstances," town officials said.

Clesceri will be returning to Illinois upon his resignation, which takes effect on Sept. 28.

“The men and women of the Matthews Police Department are some of the finest I have ever had the privilege of working with, and it is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation,” Clesceri said. “They are deeply passionate about their work and genuinely care about the people they serve. Together, we have strengthened an already solid foundation for the next chief to build upon.”

Maj. Roy Sisk will serve as interim chief while the town searches for a permanent replacement. Clesceri was credited with implementing numerous new processes during his time as Matthews' police chief. He served in the role for six months.

"I appreciate his leadership, demeanor, desire to serve this community well, and the respect he has shown for the men and women of the department," Town Manager Becky Hawke said.
