Mecklenburg County deputy hurt in Charlotte crash

The sheriff's office said another driver ran a red light, causing the deputy to hit them.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Mecklenburg County sheriff's deputy is recovering Saturday after an early-morning crash just north of uptown Charlotte.

The office said Deputy L. Blackwelder was on duty just before 7 a.m. when the crash happened at the intersection of West 12th Street and North Church Street, just off I-277. The sheriff's office said another driver ran a red light, causing Blackwelder to hit them.

Blackwelder was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center by Medic for treatment. The office said he was home and recovering as of early Saturday evening.

The sheriff's office thanked Medic for their response and said it looked forward to Blackwelder returning to duty.

Information about the other driver has not been shared as of publication.
