CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With temperatures soaring into the upper 90s, it's been difficult to stay cool. But in the Charlotte area, some of the coolest places around are the eight Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation swimming areas. At two of those locations, kids can stay cool while learning how to swim for free.
At Cordelia Swimming Pool and Double Oaks Pool - Family Aquatic Center, lessons are complimentary and are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Children can take lessons from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Sign-ups are Saturdays at 9 a.m. and are open to kids between the ages of 3 and 15.
In the United States, an average of around 900 children drown every year. These free classes are a great opportunity to teach kids how to stay safe in the water by learning the basics of swimming. Mecklenburg County’s special course is taught by certified lifeguards. It’s mandatory that an adult supervises all kids taking the lessons. Before every session, all the children are required to ask permission to go into the water. It’s part of the plan to make them responsible for all their actions when swimming.
You can log onto Mecklenburg County's website for more information about lessons plus pool locations. The county offers a variety of aquatic programs for all ages at its outdoor and indoor pools.
