CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new microtransit option has opened up in Charlotte's NoDa neighborhood, just in time for the holiday weekend.
Jump Transit offers shuttles throughout Optimist Park, Villa Heights, NoDa, and Howie Acres for $3 per person for a one-way ride.
Founder Justin Nevill says it's a need he's noticed for years in the area.
"I know a lot of neighbors dread going to a restaurant in their own neighborhood just because either you're paying $20 or $30 for an Uber for the night, or you're trying to park, and it's a huge hassle," Nevill said.
Nevill has placed multiple signs throughout the area with a QR code to take passengers to a page with the vehicle locations and timing.
Even with a blue line stop nearby, he's noticed a need for options within the neighborhood.
"It's just a natural place to get started. There's a lot of new density here as well, which is very helpful. Of course, the public transit may be able to really expand the footprint of these light rail stations to serve even more people."
This all comes ahead of Tuesday's vote to expand commuter rail into communities north of Charlotte potentially. Charlotte City Council is expected to decide on purchasing the O-Line corridor that would become the Red Line commuter train, ahead of Norfolk Southern's Sept. 9 deadline.
Regardless of the verdict, Nevill says the need for options is clear.
"This city needs more transit options. Whether it's public transit, whether it's microtransit, community transit, like we're offering, and anything in between. I think it just helps," Nevill said.
Nevill hopes to expand the company in the future. Some future options he mentioned include Belmont, Plaza Midwood, and Camp North End.
