Mint Hill officer hit by car near elementary school

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed a local police officer was hit by a car near Mint Hill Elementary.

MINT HILL, N.C. — A Mint Hill Police Department officer was hit by a vehicle outside Mint Hill Elementary School on Thursday morning, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokesperson confirmed.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday on Idlewild Road. 

The officer struck has been identified as Officer T. Zickler, according to Captain Billy Gilman of the Mint Hill Police Department.

Gilman said the driver of the car remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

According to Medic, the officer was transported to an Atrium hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The police department said Zickler is resting with family while he awaits surgery. 

The Matthews Police Department is investigating the crash on behalf of the Mint Hill Police Department.
