Monroe residents upset over mayor's post on Facebook

Many WCNC Charlotte viewers reached out and said the mayor's behavior is irresponsible.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — People in Monroe are questioning the city's mayor after making comments on Facebook that some call disrespectful.

Robert Burns, Monroe's mayor, referred to some people as "narcissistic Beta Males" and "snowflake complainers" in a post on Facebook earlier this week.

Many WCNC Charlotte viewers reached out and said it's irresponsible. As an elected official, they say it's wrong for him to say this about a group of people. Many people responded to the post and expressed dislike for their choice of words.

WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker reached out to Mayor Burns on Thursday and spoke with him over the phone about his choice of words. Burns said he didn't have time for an in-person or Zoom interview.  Walker asked Burns if he could record the phone conversation, but Burns then declined comment.

Burns added he didn't have time to listen or deal with negative comments.

Monroe's next City Council meeting is on Tuesday, Jan. 9. WCNC Charlotte will be there to ask Mayor Burns those questions in person.
