Mooresville residents and business owners question who is responsible for fixing growing sinkhole

Records show the sinkhole started to form in 2018 near North Carolina 150 and several businesses.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Questions are growing over a large sinkhole near a busy road in Mooresville

The sinkhole is located near West Plaza Drive in the parking lot of Tire Masters. Residents have noticed the sinkhole near North Carolina 150 for years and are wondering if it will continue to grow and when it will be fixed.

"Not only is it really an eyesore, but it's also just kind of like, what is the issue going on?” Kai Troescher asked.

Jeff Long runs a golf shop near the sinkhole and says there have been efforts to prevent the sinkhole from expanding. He said a neighboring business owner has done plenty of work to stop the sinkhole from growing and swallowing up their building.

"It had had episodes where [the sinkhole] got bigger due to heavy rains," Long said. "Then [the other business owner] did some work, like, put concrete in the sides and stuff like that to keep it from expanding into his building."

Records show the sinkhole started to form in 2018. Community members like Troescher are hoping something is done to fix it sooner rather than later.

“If you have an issue like that, and it's been sitting there for years and years, I don't know how many people are really going to want to be coming to a town that's not going to actively fix the problem,” Troescher said.

"The Town of Mooresville is actively working with the business owners to find a solution that both ensures the safety of residents, patrons, and the business owners, as well as a successful resolution to the sinkhole issue."
