Power outages near 800,000 as Florence rocks the Carolina coast

Nearly 800,000 people in North Carolina are without power as Tropical Storm Florence continues to batter the coast with high wind, devastating storm surge and catastrophic flooding.

CHARLOTTE, N.C — Nearly 800,000 people are without power in North Carolina as Tropical Storm Florence continues to pound the coast with devastating storm surge, catastrophic flooding and high winds.

North Carolina Emergency Management tweeted the highest concentration of outages in New Hanover, Brunswick, Wake, Onslow and Carteret counties.

Areas along the South Carolina coast, including Myrtle Beach, reported power outages Friday morning and early afternoon. The CEO of the York Electric Cooperative in South Carolina told NBC Charlotte that crews are on standby in Mississippi to assist with any outages. York County crews have been trimming trees in an effort to reduce the number of limbs that could fall on power lines during the storm.
